• Interactive simulation with role-play allowing students to practice working together to solve a real-world problem. We did this with Eisenhower Fellows in DC, and it was so much fun! They learned a lot about problem-solving together.

Susan Eisenhower
Expert-in-Residence
Eisenhower Institute
Susan Eisenhower is the Eisenhower Institute's expert-in-residence. She was a founding director and the first president of the Eisenhower Institute where she became known for her work in the former Soviet Union. For more than twenty years she traveled extensively to that region, on matters related to US national security. More recently she has concentrated her efforts on the energy security field.
At Gettysburg College, Eisenhower offers her undergraduate program, Strategy & Leadership in Transformational Times, which highlights the vital intersection between strategy and leadership while emphasizing the truly transformational times we are living in today.

Professional Biography

Mr. Michael A. Mason retired in 2020 from Verizon Communications where he served as a Senior Vice-President and Chief Security Officer. Mason joined Verizon in January 2008 and was responsible for overseeing and coordinating global security efforts throughout Verizon and all its business units, including enterprise-wide security strategy and programs, physical security, elements of cyber security, legal compliance, investigations and law enforcement matters
Immediately prior to joining Verizon, Mr. Mason retired in 2007 from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after a 23-year career. In his final assignment, he served as the Executive Assistant Director, in charge of the Bureau’s Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch. At the time of his retirement, Mr. Mason was one of the three most senior Black executives in the FBI’s history.
While serving in the FBI, Mr. Mason served in several other senior leadership positions, including serving as the Special Agent in Charge of the Sacramento Field Office and the Assistant Director in Charge of the Washington Field Office, the FBI’s second largest field office. In 2004, Mr. Mason was the recipient of a Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive Service (awarded to the top 5% of federal government executives).
He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Illinois Wesleyan University, where, in 2006 he was the honored to serve as the university’s commencement speaker. In 2007, Mason was recognized as his alma mater’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. He served on the university’s Board of Trustees for 11 years.
Over the course of his professional career Mr. Mason has sat on the boards of three non-profits, all aimed at eradicating domestic violence.
In 2014, Mr. Mason was recognized by Security 500 Magazine as one of 2014’s Most Influential Security Executives. In 2017 Black Enterprise Magazine named him one of the country’s Top 300 Black executives.
Mr. Mason is currently a motivational speaker and sole proprietor of Gladiator Always, LLC. He is the author of a book titled, “Working in America – Gladiator or Spectator…You Decide”.
He is a native of Chicago, Illinois and shares his life with his life’s love, Susan Mason. Together they raised two fine sons. Their eldest serves as a Trooper with the Washington State Patrol and their youngest is a Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician with the Chesterfield (VA) Fire Department and previously served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.
