The Continuing Threat of Nuclear Weapons
It has been a long time since we worried about the dangers posed by nuclear weapons and even longer since the destructive power of such weapons were demonstrated. I believe we need to be reminded of those dangers. It seems that the risks of the use nuclear weapons are increasing because of Vladimir Putin’s threatening language and the seemingly cavalier attitude toward their characteristics. The promising future that existed at the end of the cold war is no more. What went wrong? There are approximately 3,750 active nuclear warheads and 13,890 total nuclear warheads in the world. Almost 90% of them are in U.S. and Russia. Why do we have so many? This talk will try to address those questions and other issues relating to the current state of the nuclear landscape.
