Of Storytelling and Structural Change: Film, Philanthropy, and the Fight for a Fairer Economy

For two decades, the Gondwe Lecture has brought to campus voices willing to ask hard questions about wealth, power, and responsibility. Africana Studies and the Economics Department established the lecture in honor of Derrick K. Gondwe, a longtime member of the economics faculty and founder of Africana Studies at Gettysburg College. This year, in collaboration with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, we celebrate the lecture’s twentieth anniversary as the
College welcomes Abigail Disney —Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker, philanthropist, and one of the most prominent critics of extreme wealth concentration in American life. In conversation with Gettysburg faculty, Disney will consider storytelling as an instrument of structural change — what a documentary can accomplish that data and policy arguments cannot, and where narrative limits lie.
