RESUME BASICS

Before you click "Submit" in Handshake, use this list to check your resume for these common issues! For even more resume help, go to http://resume.career.sites.gettysburg.edu

GENERAL FORMATTING

  • Resume is 1 page.
  • Objective statement is removed.
  • Everything is in reverse chronological order (i.e., most recent experience listed first within each section).
  • Full mailing addresses for schools and experiences are not needed – just include city & state.
  • There are no personal pronouns (I, me, my, myself) on the resume.
  • Remove references list and "References Available…" statement from resume.
  • Proofread for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.

CONTACT INFORMATION

  • Name, email address, and phone number are included at a minimum. Home address may also be included.
  • Name should be bolded and in larger font size.

EDUCATION

  • Gettysburg College is listed first; include city & state.
  • Date ranges of attendance are not needed – list as Graduation: May 20XX
  • Include your degree/major, if known (ex., Bachelor of Science in Biology)

RELEVANT AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCES

  • All work experiences should include your position title, company/organization, city & state, and dates.
  • Do not list hours worked per week (*Exception: Health Sciences students should include the amount of hours worked/volunteered).

CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS/ACTIVITIES/COMMUNITY SERVICE

  • Set up similarly to Relevant/Work Experiences with activity name, your position title, and dates.

ACCOMPLISHMENT STATEMENTS

  • Bullet points do not include the phrases, "Responsibilities include…" or "Responsible for…."
  • Focus on your skills and accomplishments – do not list not job duties. For example, instead of
  • "Answered phones," try "Provided courteous and efficient customer service via phone."
