All are welcome to attend a presentation by Dr. Ashlee Plummer, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Gettysburg College Chemistry Department. Dr. Plummer completed her B.S. in Chemistry at North Carolina State University. She then did her graduate work at Johns Hopkins University in Molecular Biophysics, followed by post-doctoral work in the Cell Biology Department of Harvard Medical School. Her research interests include membrane protein biogenesis and maintenance: all cells are surrounded by membranes that contain a hydrophobic core and form a protective barrier around the precious cellular contents. This membrane is composed of both lipids and proteins – both components are critical for membrane integrity and subsequent cell survival. The biochemical process of membrane maintenance or trafficking of these components into and out of membranes is amazingly complex and cells have developed incredible mechanisms to handle this! In her seminar, she will highlight two biological examples: membrane protein folding in bacteria and cholesterol trafficking in humans.
