Smart Girls
Sulpicia and the Women of Roman Love Elegy
Sulpicia is one of the only ancient Roman women whose poetry survives. But, who was she? For centuries, scholars have debated her identity, authorship and the role of women in Roman love elegy. Dr. Hanses will revisit these debates and, through the lens of critical phenomenology , highlight how women - both free and enslaved - shaped this literary world. By rethinking the figure of the docta puella ("learned mistress") as an active voice rather than a passive muse, she shows how these poems reveal the lived experiences and creative power of women in ancient Rome.
