DEIDBJ Highlight

Black History and Women's History Month

Black History Month is this month, and Women's History Month is in March, so we would like to focus on both months by highlighting Wangari Maathai. Maathai was an environmental and political activist advocating for sustainable development and conservation. She studied biology at U.S. universities and returned to Kenya, becoming the first woman in East Africa to earn a doctorate. Maathai began the Green Belt Movement to remedy the damages caused by deforestation in Kenya (planting more than 30 million trees) and provide jobs, new skills, and opportunities for women. Her protest against President Daniel Arap Moi and developments were often met with violence and arrests. After Moi's political party lost power, she tried multiple times before being elected to a seat in Kenya's parliament. Once there, she was appointed the Assistant Minister of Environmental, Natural Resources, and Wildlife. In 2004, Maathai received a Nobel Peace Prize for her "contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace." If you want to learn more about Wangari Maathai, she released a memoir titled Unbowed in 2006 and/or click on the sources used here and here
