Upcoming ES Events


Community Fire - October 17th, 6:30 - 8 pm

  • Location: Servo Lawn
  • Description: On October 17th from 6:30 to 8 pm, join the ES Department and Garthwait Leadership Center to enjoy the company of other ES students and faculty with s’mores and lawn games. Drop by Servo Field to meet new friends, reconnect with old friends, and eat some s’mores!

Francophone Film Festival (co-sponsored by the ES department)

  • Multiple films are shown for free at the Majestic Theater throughout October.
  • The films on October 19th and 26th may be particularly interesting to ES majors (see poster above for details).

Kolbe Fellows Poster Presentations: Friday, Oct 24, 2025, 1 PM – 3 PM

  • The 2025 Kolbe Research Fellows will present posters highlighting their summer research projects.
  • Come to the library to hear about their work, gain insight into the Kolbe Research Fellowship experience, enjoy refreshments, and show your support for student scholarship.
  • Students and faculty mentors considering applications for Summer 2026 are especially encouraged to join!

Chemistry and Biochemistry Grad School Session: October 3rd, 4-5 pm

  • Location: Science Center Room 348
  • Questions? Contact Professor Hershey Suryn (gsuryn@gettysburg.edu)
  • Description: Attend a graduate school information session presented by Professor Hershey Suryn, Professor Dieter, and Professor Zhang, all from the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. They will provide information about their graduate school experiences and advice on preparing your application, including tips for writing your personal statement. The target audience is seniors majoring in the sciences who plan to apply to graduate school this year, but sophomores and juniors will also benefit by learning more about graduate programs and how you can bolster your resume.

Note: There will also be an ES-focused graduate school session in the spring semester aimed at helping sophomores and juniors start thinking about graduate school.​​​​​​​

Kolbe Research Fellowship Info Session: Monday, Oct 20, 2025, 4 PM – 5 PM

  • Information session for students considering an application to the Summer 2026 Kolbe Research Fellowship
  • Applications, prepared in collaboration with faculty mentors, are due by January 30, 2026, at noon.
  • Come to the library to learn more about this funded undergraduate research opportunity and how to put together a competitive application. Faculty interested in serving as mentors are also encouraged to attend.

Apply for Detroit Immersion Trip - Urban Farming and Economic Justice

  • Apply by October 8th to be considered for early decision and receive priority status
  • Final deadline for applications is October 30th
  • Description: Do you want to spend a week immersing yourself in another city and learning directly from community leaders about issues of food and economic justice? Apply to the immersion project in Detroit, Michigan, happening this spring break, March 7–14, 2026. This trip is an experiential learning opportunity focused on urban farming and grassroots economic justice initiatives. Participants will work with local community farms and the MSU Detroit Partnership in Food, distribute fresh meals while learning how neighborhoods fight food inequality, and meet small business owners and food entrepreneurs who are creating jobs and economic opportunities.
