Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight

Nicole Hernandez Hammer

Nicole Hernandez Hammer is a Guatemalan immigrant with Cuban heritage who found a love for nature as a child, which eventually turned into a life in science and advocacy. During her 15 years in academia, she became a well-known sea-level researcher and climate change expert before transitioning her focus to advocacy and environmental justice. Specifically, she wants to make a difference in helping Latinx communities and other communities of color who are disproportionately impacted by climate change. This work led to an invitation from First Lady Michelle Obama as her special guest at the 2015 State of the Union Address. A year later, she spoke at the Democratic National Convention about climate change and the impacts of rising sea levels on vulnerable Latinx communities. Some of her other roles have included the Florida field manager for Moms Clean Air Force, a climate-science and community advocate at the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the assistant director of the Florida Center for Environmental Studies at Florida Atlantic University. Today, she continues to be an advocate for environmental justice and works with local leaders to discuss climate change risks in their communities.
