In the winter of 1949, author Richard Wright found himself living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to star in the film version of his best-selling book, Native Son. While he would have preferred to film in his adopted hometown of Paris, France, the so-called "Paris of the Americas" proved to be a better fit for the production for various reasons. Nonetheless, it came with a string of complications to Wright's professional, financial, and personal life. My presentation will chronicle this strange chapter in one man's history and highlight its significance to a broader set of issues at the intersection of race and nation in the US and Latin America.
