Responsible Use of genAI in the Classroom: Examples in Practice
Facilitators: Tasha Gownaris (Environmental Studies), Chris Oechler (Spanish), Eatai Roth (Data Science), and Hannah Krauss (Musselman Library)
Time and location: Friday, October 25th, 12-1pm, Penn Hall Lyceum OR via Zoom (https://gettysburg.zoom.us/j/98173846114)
During this JCCTL session, an interdisciplinary group of faculty will explore the responsible and effective use of generative AI in the classroom. Tasha Gownaris (Environmental Studies) will kick off the discussion by presenting prompts for faculty to consider when integrating genAI into their teaching practices. Chris Oechler (Spanish) will share assignments he has designed to help students effectively engage with genAI. Eatai Roth (Data Science) will examine these questions from a data science perspective, addressing the level of knowledge students need to benefit from genAI coding tools like copilot. Hannah Krauss (Musselman Library) will conclude the panel with guidance on how students should cite generative AI when faculty choose to allow its use. We anticipate time for discussion, focusing on the questions faculty have about using (or not using) genAI in their classrooms and on how we can effectively navigate this complex but increasingly prevalent tool.
This session is supported by a grant from the Central Pennsylvania Consortium (CPC) for the project "Cultivating Attention and Engagement: Navigating Technology Use in the Liberal Arts Classroom," in collaboration with Franklin & Marshall College.
