Details

Professional bassist and faculty member at Gettysburg College's Sunderman Conservatory of Music, Dr. Kris Monson will demonstrate piano rolls on Musselman Library's circa 1901 player piano and share sheet music from the library’s archival collections, bringing to life the sounds that reflected and fueled America’s surging fascination with jazz and blues in the early twentieth century. Works by influential composers such as Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, and Duke Ellington will be "mechanically performed" and contextualized, highlighting the essential role of player pianos and sheet music in popularizing, democratizing, and shaping early conceptions of jazz and blues, as well as the various interests and actors involved in the music's commodification.
