Eisenhower Institute- Lunch and Learn-Manzanar Panel Discussion
Schmucker Art Gallery Main Space Exhibit- Schmucker Hall

Join the Eisenhower Institute and Schmucker Art Gallery for a panel discussion on a U.S. policy that led to the forcible relocation and incarceration of 110,000 Japanese-American men, women and children during World War II. They were held in 10 government-run, military style camps. This panel highlights the Manzanar War Relocation Center in Inyo County, California, documented by Ansel Adams, one of America's most well-known photographers. In the main gallery, surrounded by more than 50 prints that capture the people, activities and everyday life at Manzanar, we will explore the political and social implications of this three-year, mass detainment.

Panelists:
Yoko Nishimura, Assistant Professor, Asian Studies
Dr. Nishimura's primary research skills and teaching experience are in the archaeology, history, religions, and languages of ancient East Asia and the Near East, particularly those of ancient Japan and Turkey, with a focus on the material cultures of—and historical documents about—the peoples that have been in these regions since prehistoric time periods.

Alauna Safarpour, Assistant Professor, Political Science
Dr. Safarour's research interests include race and ethnic politics, prejudice reduction, public opinion, and political participation. She has also conducted extensive research on American public health attitudes and behaviors.

Following the panel, guests are encouraged to explore the exhibit, curated by Emma Wylam ’24 and Sonia Crawford ’24, under the direction of Interim Gallery Director Sarah Kate Gillespie.

The exhibit is open to the public through April 13, Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm (closed March 9-18 for Spring Break).
