Join the Gettysburg College Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony, under the direction of Dr. Russell McCutcheon, for Masterworks and Premieres, a powerful and diverse program showcasing both timeless classics and groundbreaking new works. This exciting concert takes place at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, at Gettysburg’s Majestic Theater.

The evening features saxophone soloist Orazio Thomas, a senior music student at Gettysburg College and this year’s Concerto Competition winner. Orazio will perform Paul Creston’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra, a virtuosic and expressive work that highlights the saxophone’s lyrical beauty and rhythmic intensity. Originally composed in 1941, Creston’s concerto remains a cornerstone of the saxophone repertoire, blending rich harmonies, soaring melodies, and energetic interplay between soloist and ensemble.

Also featured on the program is Song of the Ancient Night by Jon Russell, an innovative and immersive work using open-ended notation. Providing pitch content and text instructions but leaving interpretative choices to the performers, this piece ensures that no two performances are ever the same. The Sunderman Conservatory Wind Symphony is honored to present this consortium premiere, shaping a one-of-a-kind musical experience for the audience.

Additional pieces include Nkeiru Okoye’s Voices Shouting Out, a bold and uplifting response to 9/11 that celebrates resilience and hope. William Schuman’s George Washington Bridge paints a striking musical portrait of the famous New York landmark, capturing its grandeur and motion. Four Scottish Dances by Malcolm Arnold evokes Scottish folk music, brimming with character and charm. The concert concludes with Adam Gorb’s Awayday, an exhilarating and fast-paced musical adventure that propels the audience on a thrilling journey.

With an inspiring blend of solo artistry, new music, and timeless wind band repertoire, this concert is not to be missed!
