Happy United Nations General Assembly Week!
It's been an interesting week UN-wise. If you haven't been keeping up with what is being covered duirng the General Debate of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, I recommend skimming some of it because there are many pertinent topics being discussed. Next Wednesday will be the day after the close of the General Debate, so there will be lots to discuss at the beginning of the meeting.
This past Wednesday we had our first Introduction to Model UN briefing. For those of you who missed the meeting this week or are unable to make our general meetings Wednesdays 7:30-8:30pm in Glat 102, I have attached the first powerpoint of important things we covered in our meeting. From here on out, important documents and tools for this organization will be posted on our website (Home - International Affairs Club and Model UN | Gettysburg College) under the Resources > Documents > Introduction to Model UN Lessons.
On Wednesday the 27th we will be digging more into different committee processes and taking a deeper look at Crisis committees. We're going to be starting some practical applications as well, so come with topic ideas that interest you for a staged debate. I want ideas from you all so that you are learning the skill of debating while doing it with something you are interested in talking about. I will be uploading some specific manuals about the flow of each type of committee to our documents page (outlined above) so you and check them out in your free time if you are interested in getting a jump on next week's material.
For the best part of this message, conference applications are attached in this email. We will be attending University of North Carolina Chapel Hill's conference Thursday November 16th to Sunday November 19th. Please have this application back to me at meyeso01@gettysburg.edu by noon on October 4th at the latest. The sooner the better, though.
Additionally, we are having elections to fill the Treasurer position on a temporary, semester-long basis. Those who are interested must be nominated by another active member in the organization and have a short written statement as to why they believe the person is best fit for the position. These are due by 9/22 by noon at the latest in the interest of having elections ASAP on Wednesday.
If anyone has any questions or just wants to talk a little bit more about what we covered in our meeting yesterday, feel free to reach out. As always, I'm always available via email and around campus.
Cheers to the upcoming weekend,
Sophia Meyer
President
