Workshop descriptions:
Political Science and International Relations at Gettysburg: Learning Beyond the Classroom -
Gettysburg’s Political Science Department is looking forward to sharing information with all of you about ways to build upon and extend your passion for politics, international relations, and the United Nations. On Saturday, Professor Lindsay Reid – whose expertise lies within the field of international relations and whose research focuses on the resolution of civil wars and women’s inclusion in post-conflict societies – will host a session on ways to enrich your learning by choosing a course of study that supports and extends opportunities outside of the confines of a classroom. For example, do you think it’s important to complement your studies with an internship? Professor Reid will share information on how Gettysburg’s Political Science Department is building a centralized database of internships to share with its students. Want to study abroad? She’ll discuss students’ paths to Ecuador, Rwanda, Tunisia, Australia, and Italy, among other locations. Want to engage in policy discussions at the State Department or the UN? She’ll discuss opportunities at Gettysburg to participate in research for the U.S. Department of State, and she’ll share reflections on a recent trip she took to the United Nations. Worried that studying political science or international relations won’t set you up for a good job? She’ll reflect on students near-universal success in getting jobs in place like the FBI, Congress, or State Department, and graduates’ unbelievable success in getting into top law and graduate schools. Professor Reid wants to note that whether you have Gettysburg on a list of potential colleges or not, this session will help show you what to look for and what to ask as you start or continue to explore your next academic steps. Come with questions, and come ready to discuss how learning only begins – but doesn’t end – in the classroom!
