Sorority & Fraternity Annual Evaluation
Each year, our Greek Life community is evaluated by the college in four key areas: Academic Achievement & Intellectual Engagement, Member Recruitment & Retention, Community Engagement, & Organizational Management. Additionally, each chapter must provide a prepared video answering a series of questions concerning their external & internal programming, management, and involvement.
Gettysburg College’s fraternities and sororities have participated in a regular review process since 1998. In that time the Evaluation has evolved in response to the changing needs and realities of Gettysburg College and the national fraternity and sorority system. Most recently the Evaluation was updated to focus on continuous improvement and student leader skill development, while still providing an assessment tool to track the health of each organization.
The goals of the Fraternity and Sorority Evaluation process are:
1. Align the learning that is occurring within fraternities and sororities with broader co-curricular learning goals and campus initiatives.
2. Provide students with opportunities to practice their skills in the areas of organizational assessment, goals development, project management, team management, adaptability, and performance review reflection.
3. Provide autonomy and support to student leaders in their work to identify areas of improvement and implement their vision for how to make positive change.
4. Develop a culture of continual growth and improvement within chapters and the broader fraternity and sorority community.
The updated evaluation manual is linked below with all criteria for evaluation noted within.
How the evaluation process works:
The evaluation process measures the success of a chapter during the course of the calendar year. The calendar year was chosen because all chapters at Gettysburg College follow a January-December term for their officers. Below is a brief description of the timeline of the Evaluation Process.
Beginning at the end of the previous Fall, chapter leadership are provided with the updated evaluation process for the following calendar year. Leaders are responsible for developing and defining their own goals and metrics by which their organization will be evaluated on for the calendar year. Each goal will be required to have a deadline for completion defined by the organization as well as a member responsible for executing the goal. Goals for the year must be submitted by mid-February for final approval.
Once the organizational goals have been approved, fraternities and sororities are expected to spend the year working toward accomplishing their goals within each of the categories defined as important components for chapter success. All responsible leaders are expected to submit reflections within two weeks of the chapter's identified goal submission deadline. All evaluation goal reflections MUST be submitted before the last day of classes in the Fall semester of the given calendar year.
